Science Methods 2 Week 1
- What did you do in lab today? Today in lab we talked about how the earth rotates and orbits the earth. We took a pre test about what we knew about the way that earth orbits and our distance from earth to things like the clouds, moon and stars.
- What was the big question? -the sun is at the center of the solar system, -the earth orbits the sun, the moon orbits earth, the moon does not create its own light just reflects light off of the sun which cause moon phases. - the sun creates shadows, depending on what hemisphere your in depends on which way your shadow faces, in iowa your shadow always faces north. eclipses occur when the moon fully blocks the sun in orbit or when the earth fully blocks the moon. equinox happens when the sun is directly in line with the equator. depending on where we are in relation to the equator and what time of year it is effects the amount of daylight we have and the tempature outside.
- What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? Today in discussion we learned about how where we are in relation to the equator and which ways our shadows aim. At noon in this hemisphere our shadows always are facing north. we talked about winter and summer solstice and the fact that when we get closer to winter solstice our days get shorter and when we get closer to summer solstice our days get longer. The orbit is nearly a perfect circle. We learned about the lines on earth, arctic circle, tropic of cancer, equator, tropic of capricorn, antarctic circle.
- Read the online textbook, chapter 1: https://pressbooks.uiowa.edu/methodsii/chapter/earth/
- What did you learn? I knew that the sun was at the center of the solar system but I didn't know that the word for it was heliocentrism or that the idea had a labeled term. I didn't know that there was a time when people thought that earth was the center of the solar system. I knew the term equinox but I didn't know that it meant the day of the year where everywhere on earth got the same amount of sun.
- What was most helpful? I think what was really helpful for my learning this chapter was having the vocab to read over before deep diving into those terms and reading these terms without knowing their meanings.
- What do you need more information on? I don't think I need anymore information on these specific topics because any questions Ieft discussion with got covered in lecture.
5. What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have? Im concerned how much of this I don't remember from grade school at all.
