Science 2 Week 2
- What did you do in lab today? No lab this week due to holiday
- What was the big question?
- How did the Space Race shape our understanding of space and technology? it shaped our understanding of space and technology due to being able to set things up like satellites.
- What are the major milestones in human space exploration? 1957 Sputnick orbits earth, 1958 us launches explorer 1 which discovered van allens belt, 1959 soviet unuion lanches first ship to reach the moon, 1961 Yuri Gagaron from the soviet union becomes first human in space and shortly after the US sends Alan Shepard, 1962 John Glen is the first person to orbit the earth. 1968 apollo 8 becomes first crewed aircraft to orbit the moon, 1969 Apollo 11 becomes first ship to land on the moon, 1972 Apollo 17 was the last time humans landed on the moon.
- How have different people contributed to space science? Dr. Van Allen created the radiator detector in the ship that discovered van Allens belt. A group of woman known as mercury twelve passed the space test but didnt go to space because of their gender.
- What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? The south pole has 24 hours of direct sunlight during winter solstice in Iowa. Over 2,000 years ago they nearly got the size of the earth correct. In the race to land on the moon america was competing with russia to see who could get there first and Russia sent America one of the dogs they sent to space as a gift to taunt us saying they were ahead of us. It would've been a lot easier and cheaper for Nasa to have sent a woman to space but they sent a man anyways.
- Read the online textbook, chapter 1: https://pressbooks.uiowa.edu/methodsii/chapter/earth/
- What did you learn?I thought it was super interesting to learn about Dr. Van Allen because I knew of the building here but had no idea of his connection to that huge discovery in space.
- What was most helpful? What was most helpful about this chapter is seeing all the big discoveries of space in order to see which advancements happened when and what countries were doing things.
- What do you need more information on? nothing I feel like this chapter does a really good job at clearing up any questions I had.
5. What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have? Why hasn't anyone been to the moon since 1972?
